Web-enabled image servers allow credentialed users to access diagnostic images easly with virtually any standard PC connected to the intranet/internet. Scaleable local on-line image storage with regulatory compliant digital archiving eliminates removable media (shelve) archiving. Remote imaging locations are often linked to the central PACS via teleradiology.
PACS improves archiving and image distribution efficiency while lowering the costs and associated risk of data loss when compared to modality based archiving on mix-matched storage cartridges and film.
